I would like to thank the New Jersey Libertarian Party (Tim O'Brien of that party is a member of this group and receives these messages) for its offer of the use of its Kiosk on the Atlantic City Boardwalk on a split-profit basis. The proposal is that we can have the kiosk for an extended period of time and share profits from any sales of materials of books with the Libertarian Party 50-50. Here are my thoughts.
I think we FairTaxers should try to take advantage of the offer. The exposure the FairTax would get from such a venue would be extremely worthwhile. It would be akin to a street fair.
This development might tie in to the new availability of a Lock Box at FairTax national. We at FairTax in New Jersey have been putting off going to the level of organization that would require having a budget, handling funds and possibly having a separate formal organization. The burden of qualifying for tax-exempt status, and the attendant work, has been holding us back. If we are relieved from those responsibilities through the Lock Box, the offer from the Libertarians might be the catalyst that brings us to fundraising and budgeting activity. We will need this activity in the long run to move the FairTax along at the rate we need to get it passed.
The offer requires us to staff a booth with volunteers and acquire and manage FairTax inventory to sell to the public. Our street-fair captains should be famaliar with much of this work. Our street fairs, however, have been in the North for single days, and AC is in the South. This project would last for a period of time. This project might be a good recruitment opportunity to work with the Convio list. We should get a coordinator volunteer ASAP - or perhaps I can appoint one.
The last discussion point is about the relationship this offer represents with the Libertarian Party. As you know, FairTax is distinct from political parties and must remain so, both in appearance and in reality. This arrangement cannot be seen as an endorsement of the Libertarian Party, and the Libertarian Party also has made it clear that this proposal is not a specific endorsement of us (although an endorsement in the future from them would be most welcome). The Libertarian Party is making this offer because it wants to make the public aware of groups with issues that it may not otherwise be exposed to. For this reason, I am told the Libertarian Party is also making this offer to the Constitution Party.
I expect that our profit from such a venture would be modest, and the half that we turn over to the Libertarians can be properly characterized as a small fee for the venue. We have similar arrangements when our national group has a booth a events such as CPACC, or the Congressional Black Caucus. There will be Libertarian insignia on the booth, but we can point out to inquirers that we are a separate organization. The Libertarians are simply making the venue available.
Please let me have your comments and questions.
Thanks.
~Jim
