Hi David,
Bill Rollyson suggested I contact you. I have been having a discussion with my son and daughter, who after listening to NPR said the Japanese economy has been stagnant for a decade because its people saved. I pointed out that Japan has a high corporate tax rate but was unable to point to anything else. I also seem to remember that Japan spent heavily on public works. Do you have any facts and arguments that would confirm or dispel the notion that personal savings was a good or bad thing for the Japanese economy?
Thanks for your help. It's not quite the Fair Tax, but the Fair Tax will encourage personal savings.
Dear David,
Thank you for your well-reasoned observations about the so-called Paradox of Thrift and for tying it in to the Japanese experience. Your comments were most helpful to me in giving my children further issues to consider. I await their responses.
Best wishes,
~Jim
