Replace All Federal Taxes on Income with the Fair Tax Act , HR 25

An open letter to Congress:

Recently we have seen a series of books documenting the role of the lobbyist and the use of privileged information for personal stock trading profit.  Against a background of a favorability rating in single digits, it all seems like “piling on”.  The sad fact, however, is that you deserve every bit of it, probably more.  You are presiding over a time of serious decline in this unique experiment in representational democracy, as well as in our international influence, but most troubling, in our overall economic well-being.  We, the people, know it and so should you.

Let’s focus on the economic issue.  More and more of you are beginning to see that the income tax is standing in the way of a robust and sustainable economic recovery.  Very likely this will dominate discussion in upcoming sessions, as well it should.  Several schemes have been proposed to reform the income tax, such as a VAT, a “flat” tax, and a federal consumption tax.  Of all the options, only one meets the urgent need, not simply of reform, but of outright replacement of the income tax.  What’s needed is the FairTax.

The FairTax bill has been held captive in the House Ways and Means Committee since 1999.  Whenever we advocates send pleadings to our representatives, they are more often than not answered with polite, boilerplate protestations which sidestep our concerns with impertinent drivel.   To the 76 members of Congress who have cosponsored HR25 and S13, consider yourselves exempt from this message.  Thank you, you need read no further.

To the rest of you, ignorance of the FairTax bill is inexcusable after $23 million dollars worth of research and countless pleadings from your “employers” from around the country.  One cannot help but conclude the role of lobbyists and personal profit has something to do with your reticence to deal forthrightly with the FairTax.

If you are serious about bringing back jobs, and the “made in USA” label, you can redeem your poor ratings, by the immediate passage of the FairTax bill.  Your grandchildren will see you in a much more favorable light than your contemporaries see you now.

Excellent letter.  As a follow up to Mark's comment on those who have co-sponsored the bill but do nothing to bring others on board, that's been one of our frustrations.  As I see it, co-sponsoring is just the beginning, and we should firmly demand more of the 76 who have co-sponsored FairTax.  They are the Congressional equivalents of the many supporters who pass my FairTax bedecked car with a smile and a thumbs up.  What are they doing to spread the word?

Mark, you are exactly correct. Those we have elected are given an excuse, that they must get re-elected to continue to serve us, and thus don't have time to support the FairTax 100%. We must impress upon them that the reason they were elected in the first place was to fix the problems we are enduring. I say throw out any member of Congress who was elected as a supporter. Show them that we are indeed a serious movement that can affect the outcome of elections.

Mark - We are quickly running out of time.  These guys need to get in touch with their backbones.  Many of them are preoccupied with getting re-elected.  We need to impress upon them as strongly as possible that re-election depends on solving things rather than kicking the can down the road one more time.

I'm surprised that many of the co-sponsors  (like John Duncan Jr. TN) apparently are not trying to convince  their fellows in congress to join them. Mr Duncan's own Washingtgon web site says the FairTax will likely not pass due to the "strongly entrenched" influence against it. I sent him a lettter that he should use his position to encourage others to join him instead of weakly saying "oh well, too bad we can't get this passed".
