Congressman Woodall's Tax Day Press Release 4/17/2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Woodall (R-GA) spearheaded a Tax Day morning press conference calling on Americans to get the word out to their Representatives in Washington that they want bold tax reform solutions—not political gimmicks. Woodall, the primary sponsor of H.R. 25, The FairTax, along with many other FairTax co-sponsors from both the House and the Senate (S. 13), as well as the…

A Fair Tax for Progressives

The FairTax continues to be perceived as a "conservative" or "Republican" initiative, and, of course, there's a lot for conservatives to like about it. But properly understood, the FairTax should be widely viewed as a conservative-progressive "win-win". The key, it seems to me, is for open-minded progressives to accept (or at least think about) the proposition that a tax is more truly progressive if it taxes the most the people who consume the most. That's the point I tried to make in…

Punishing tax code

I think for many of us it's becoming increasingly clear that raising income is a secondary use of the income tax in today's political environment.  The primary use is to turn people's bank accounts into political footballs by punishing certain groups and rewarding their buddies.  In today's environment, the Buffett rule is a perfect example of that.  The actual tax wouldn't raise much money at all, but the Democrats who support it clearly don't care!  Their main objective is to punish…

Buffett Rule and the Fair Tax

It's truly a sign of how enlightened the Fairtax community is when we see people in Washington trying to make our tax code more fair with a needlessly complicated "Buffett rule" when we all know that the Fairtax solves this fairness issue by removing the "capital gains loophole" that Warren Buffett and Mitt Romney alike have taken advantage of.  It truly is a travesty that Warren Buffett's secretary pays a higher percent of her income to the government that many multi-billionaires, but…

Fair Tax Press Conference

WASHINGTON, D.C. The American people demand bold solutions. Congressman Rob Woodall’s (R-GA) bill, H.R. 25, The FairTax, is one of the boldest tax reform bills in Congress. This Tuesday, April 17, Congressman Rob Woodall, along with several H.R. 25 co-sponsors, the President of the National Small Business Association, and the President of the National Taxpayers…

New book with a chapter on the FairTax

Recently I completed work on a book in collaboration with Mark Perry, an economist at the American Enterprise Institute. It focuses on the government’s most destructive economic policies and argues for market-based reforms in banking and health care, federal downsizing and tax reform. It is now available here at Amazon.com and my chapter on the FairTax is…

The history of this nation and its present state answer some very old questions. What is the cost of liberty? How can freedom prosper under government regulation? Can a citizen alter or abolish the system of control placed over him? The successes and strides that America has made over the years seem to give us clues to the answers. However, there seems to be a turning point in our philosophy as a people in the past few years. The word cost is meaningless in our national discourse as it seems…

The Income Tax: Revenue Raiser or Tool of Tyrants

Relatively few people realize that for much of our history, the income tax did not exist. Our Nation was

founded, grew, and become a major world power, all without having any form of individual or corporate

income taxation. In fact, it wasn’t until the late 1800s, and the development of the Progressive-Marxist

movement, that a progressive income tax became established in academic thought. And it took until…

Critics of the FairTax love to beat us up about the exclusive rate being 30%. Has anyone ever figured out what the exclusive rate is for the income tax? It turns out in the affirmative. Beacon Hill Institute published in 2007, in a paper titled What Rate Really Works? that the inclusive rate would be 32.53% and the exclusive rate would be 48.22%.…
