Their are several reasons this is relevent but one of the most important to me is as yet another illustration that what the government giveth in the tax code, it can take away. There are some groups who believe they might be disadvantaged under the FairTax (even if they are wrong), because of some special interest provision (anything that treats one group different than others is special interest regardless how big the group) in the current code.
Nothing is so sacred it can't be taken, especially considering the size of debt that needs to be paid in the future and the propensity of both parties to continue to increase spending
