Fair Tax Nation

Replace All Federal Taxes on Income with the Fair Tax Act , HR 25

Dear Mr. Mathews:

Thank you for contacting me regarding tax reform. I appreciate hearing from you and would like to respond to your concerns.

On March 29, 2007, Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) introduced the Fair Tax Act (S. 1025). This legislation would establish a national sales tax and would have repealed the income tax, the self-employment tax, estate and gift taxes, and payroll taxes. A tax rate of 23 percent would be levied upon the final sale of all goods and services. The bill also would allow for a sales tax rebate based on family size and income. In addition, S. 1025 would eliminate funding for the Internal Revenue Service after Fiscal Year 2009 and instead establish a Sales Tax Bureau in the Department of the Treasury to administer the national sales tax. However, the Senate was unable to give further consideration to the bill before the 110th Congress adjourned on January 2, 2009. Please know that I will keep your views in mind should this, or any related legislation, be reintroduced in the 111th Congress.

I share your concern that the United States tax code is burdensome and intrusive and needs to be reformed. As a nation, we have to stop the growth of the federal government, and give Americans back more of their hard earned money.

Thank you for sharing your views with me. If you have additional questions or comments, please contact me. For more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov.
