Sorry Pati, It was only our local newspaper. But its still a way to get our message out there.

Currently, I'm working on a letter to the editor at the dayton daily news as relates to an opinion the published on April 22. It was entitled "Austria better GOP pick in Greene, Clarke.

In the body of the article they state "Mr Mitchel 62 supports.... the (unworkable) FairTax plan.

I think they owe us an explanation as to why they think its unworkable and what their sources are.

I have found that when forced to come up with answers, they don't usually have any.

I sure would like to see others join in this effort.

Regards,
Frank

Is that in the Dayton Daily News? Too cool! I've sent letters to Gingrich at American Solutions and to Boortz requesting that they assist us in bringing about a National Debate between proponents of the various tax plans, so that the American voter has the BEST opportunity to understand the differences and to make informed decisions...also to MAKE tax reform THE issue this election cycle.

I will contemplate letters to the editor, but it seems as if you have a good handle on that for the time being. LOL
Good job!

Well, I guess we will have to agree to disagree on whether or not it is a tax 'plan' versus a bill that sets the criteria for what type of 'plans' there should be going forward.

It's entirely possible that my interpretation of what you were saying with regards to the bill is not what you 'were' saying ...I'll concede that point. It just seemed to me that you were saying he somehow had done something wrong or 'anti' the Fair Tax, when in fact, it can't be, otherwise those others, to include Linder, would not have cosponsored it. If I misunderstood what you were saying, my apologies. But let's, for the sake of argument, at least include here what the summary of HR 982 says and that way, others can interpret it their own way, since there seems to be disagreement about what it says. Fair enough? LOL

Here it is from the link:

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-982&tab=summary

2/11/2009--Introduced.
Tax Code Termination Act - Terminates the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 after December 31, 2012, except for self-employment taxes, Federal Insurance Contributions Act taxes, and railroad retirement taxes. Requires a two-thirds majority vote in Congress to change such termination date.
Declares that any new federal tax system should be a simple and fair system that: (1) applies a low rate to all Americans; (2) provides tax relief for working Americans; (3) protects the rights of taxpayers and reduces tax collection abuses; (4) eliminates the bias against savings and investment; (5) promotes economic growth and job creation; and (6) does not penalize marriage or families.
Requires that the new federal tax system be approved by Congress in its final form by July 4, 2012.

See that where it says 'declares that any new tax system..."? That's a clear indication to me that it is NOT a plan, but sets up ONLY the criteria or standards that a new 'plan' must meet. But, we'll let others decide for themselves what it means then. That's fine.

And, NO Frank...I would NEVER let a disagreement over what something says or someone's opinion, which may differ from mine, stop me from interacting or continuing to suppor the effort. I TRULY enjoyed the meeting at Rousch's and hope to attend more of them in future! I LOVE to see people energized about the Fair Tax AND about the politics that affect their lives directly. We don't have to agree on everything. : )

Thanks for the quick and respectful response. It's refreshing to be able to agree to disagree. That doesn't happen often enough in my opinion. : )

Hi Pati, Thank you for being so thourough and quick about checking this out. But first, let me set the record straight. I never said or implied that Steve Austria is corrupt or dishonest. I do believe he is there representing his own desires more than that of his constituency.

The fact is HR 982 is tax reform, just as HR 25 is . The difference is one is token reform while the other is real reform that addresses the core problems with our tax system. And you are absolutely right to point out that 42 other FairTax cosponsors signed this bill. But they did not stop there. They cosponsored the FairTax too. Which is what we are asking Mr. Austria to do. I suppose that we will have to agree to disagree on why Mr. Austria can't or won't sign the bill.

I hope that your enthusiasm (?) for the FairTax will not be dampened by our differences and look forward to working with you and everyone else in the future to get this legislation passed.

With regards to HR 982, the bill that was brought up during the above meeting and purported to discredit Congressman Steve Austria, I think the record needs to be set straight. I'm all for indignation at corrupt or dishonest politicians...not based on incorrect information, however. That's just not right.

The fact is that HR 982 is NOT a 'tax plan'. It is a bill, signed by no less than 42 of the Fair Tax cosponsors to INCLUDE John Linder!, that merely repeals ALL tax code back to 1986 for a two year period and lays out the CRITERIA on what tax systems to be considered in subsequent tax plans MUST include...Guess what? That criteria is PRECISELY met by the Fair Tax plan!

So, Austria neither lied when he said he couldn't sponsor a TAX PLAN bill, because HR 982 is NOT a tax plan at all, but the bill used to IMPUGN Austria in that meeting is co-sponsored by 42 co-sponsors of the Fair Tax!

I think the record needs to be corrected. I don't think we do ourselves ANY good making enemies of people in Congress who at least APPEAR to be doing everything they can to lay the groundwork for the potential passage of the Fair Tax.

That's my opinion on this. This type of thing should have been fully investigated before being presented as evidence of something that it is not.
