Fair Tax Nation

Replace All Federal Taxes on Income with the Fair Tax Act , HR 25

Seems to me that it is against American values to have a non-contributory retirement system.

What has made this country great is our value of personal responsibility.  To remove that from the Social Security system - which was a step away from those values - completely seems to be moving us in the direction of socialist europe.

David,

We'll move it over to the Forum section after this, lol.

SS is fine until 2035,  but the reason it's running out right now is because we will soon have more people in retirement than compared to working Americans than ever before.  In addition to that, the US is the only Western nation that isn't seeing a population DROP.  However, that's largely thanks to immigration.  What will we do when that immigration influx stops.  We will once again loose even more funds for Social Security.

With the Fair Tax, not only would all of the workers be paying into it, but those currently receiving SS would be paying into it with the sales tax. Other people including undocumented workers (which I believe is around 10 million people right now), drug dealers, and everyone else who is currently getting paid under the table would also finally be contributing.

I know you don't like the idea of contributing to a retirement plan using a sales tax, but I think your view of SS as a retirement plan is a wrong.  SS is "retirement insurance."  It's goal is to make sure that seniors are protected up to a certain point financially.  It was never intended to be used like a pension.  Unfortunately that is where we are today.

Also, the Fair Tax would STILL require businesses to report workers incomes for the purpose of "fairness," so you should have no concern with that.

Doug,

We probably should move this discussion somewhere since it is not productive to the purpose of this site.  Checked the "Forum" not sure that would work.

The concept of contributing to your "retirement plan" by paying a sales tax is just too much of a stretch for me.  Today I pay a share of my income into a ponzi scheme that I then get to be the recipient of in my old age - a little wierd but there is a definite and connection.

As to your allegation that SS is not self-sustaining, that is a myth.  It has more than paid its way to date and in fact about half of the national debt is owed to the SS fund.  Without any changes it is solid thru 2035.  It only takes minor "tweaks" to keep it solid.

There is also a connection in today's system that allow for the amount recieved in "retirement" to be tied to the amount paid in during the working years, a fundamental "fairness" issue.  With the "fair tax" that would go away..

Maybe we can take this over to the "forum" section, since that's the proper place for discussions.

How does the Fair Tax make SS non-contributory?  Everytime you buy something you are contributing.  Hell, you're contributing more than enough to FINALLY make it solvent (something not done now.)

The Social Security system is new, only dating from 1935. Read the bill http://www.ssa.gov/history/35actinx.html

As Social Security is written now almost everyone can recieve benefits even if they don't contribute for example disabled children and the very poor.

You know the courts have ruled that you are not legally entitled to your Social Security paymens and the government can stop them at any time. Not to mention Social Security is not found in the Constitution so some would say the system itself is a move in the direction of socialist europe.

The purpose of this site is to pass the FairTax bill so we need to end the discussion on this site but we can continue offline if you wish.
