I have found the following response helpful at stopping comments about Fairtax helpful. I save it as a text file and cut and paste into editorials etc. It allows people to make a decision with out any arguing, it and seems to usually end the discussions. I am open to discussing any edits.

Fairtax S 296 or HR 25 is not a Sales tax It is not a VAT nor is it a Flat tax. Fairtax is not about personalities, or candidates and Fairtax is non partisan. Fairtax has a consumption tax as a component but it is much much more. If you are interested in the facts you may find them here.

The "flat" tax (income and business taxes) proposed in California to overcome their fiscal woes might be a place to focus the Fair (consumption) Tax vs. flat income tax discussion. Could Californian Fair Tax people change the debate there, and thus influence US legislation? California has led US policy before, at least at the state level.

Last night at our local FairTax meeting we were discussing how the income tax started. It was only for the top wage earners and it was just 1%. And as you can see it was a FLAT tax; but it grew.
