Replace All Federal Taxes on Income with the Fair Tax Act , HR 25

A post at the website The Worldview Weblog titled The Other Shoe Drops? The Other shoe Drops? mentions talk shows discussing Obama possibly implementing an EU style VAT national sales tax but doesn't specify which talk shows. Has anyone heard of this being discussed? It seems at the very least this could hurt the Fair Tax movement by people confusing a Fair Tax style consumption tax with a VAT. Worse case scenario is if this is true it could end any chance of a Fair Tax being enacted.

I think this is when FairTaxers head's would explode. 'Just guessing...
VAT in the UK is 17.5%...on top of income taxes etc.....this would brush the dust off the true meaning of the 2nd amendment...for me at least anyway.
Haven't heard anything about this . . .
Lord, have mercy on us! Amen.
If President Obama wants to face an overwhelmingly Republican Congress in Janaury 2011 (or face all-out protests by Americans over taxes by this summer!), go right ahead with trying to pass a VAT in the USA.
Obama is going to have to raise taxes eventually to cover all this spending....so this is an option he'll have.
Of course its not the best option by far...we all know what that is.
I was at a National Federation of Independent Business meeting in Austin yesterday (300 in attendance). It was the bi-annual NFIB Day at the Capitol meeting. In Texas, we're lucky. The legislature only meets for 140 days every 2 years (a regular joke is that they should meet for 2 days every 140 years). The purpose of the meeting was to lobby the legislature on small business issues.

Speakers included the Governor and the State Comptroller. The State Comptroller is elected and is important because she does all the tax collecting for the state -- primarily sales tax. I asked her if she was familiar with the FairTax and whether a similar approach might work at the state level. I think she misunderstood my question because she indicated the FairTax as a federal issue. She also said it is very complex (as though the current tax regs aren't!). A number of attendees came up to me at the break and voiced their interest in the FairTax.

Another speaker was Tom Pauken, chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission (unemployment taxes). He mentioned a VAT that would replace corporate income taxes. I didn't get a chance to ask him about the FairTax, but this confirms that a VAT is being discussed.

Actually, I think this is good. At least it gets people talking about alternatives to the income tax.

BTW, I am trying to get NFIB/Texas to send out a questionnaire to its members about the FairTax. The way NFIB works is that they don't take a stand on an issue unless a significant portion of their membership supports it. There are about 25,000 members in Texas, so if we can get them on our side, it would be a big boost for the FairTax. If you are an NFIB member, please contact me. Nothing will happen until after the legislative session is over in about 3 months.
That gets me to thinking that maybe you should have some sort of brochure to handout at these meetings. Depending on your type of business, maybe you could have some at your office or checkout.

Even a business card with fairtax info would be helpful. People have a tendency not to remember things unless they are written down for them.

Are any of those made available by the fair tax groups?
I made up some business cards. I put all the points of the Fairtax on them. Whenever I talk the Fairtax with someone, I always give them a card. I do know people will NOT remember Fairtax.org, but if you give them a card they can look up the info at a later time. If you would like more info about the card email me bankston101@gmail.com.
His talking about this would only make people MORE willing to hear other options which is a HUGE plus for us FairTax supporters...because BO would say "IN ADDITION TO" we would say INSTEAD OF BOTH (income tax & VAT)... The other reason it would be GREAT is because my congressman won't co-sponsor HR25 because he is afraid that DC will implement a sales tax IN ADDITION to the INCOME tax...helloooo there is nothing stopping them from doing that and if BO does it that will be a PERFECT reason for him to STAND up and sign the FairTax because at least with the FairTax we'll only have ONE instead of TWO!! Right now everyone is confused because NO ONE is talking about it...a VAT tax in addition to the INCOME tax would get people doing more than talking they'd actually be WILLING to listen!! BINGO!!!
I haven't heard anything about it....
VAT could easily pass, the republicans gave Obama a free ride for a few years. All he has to do is state that this tax not only taxes us but taxes the supply chain of businesses, then after that the common voter will smell corporate blood and it's over with. I hate to think how this will effect Gas prices. If were taxing the manufacturer then how are we going to Tax OPEC ? Also Iran is moving to VAT and EU already has. Guys get ready for a ride, we already actively trade with Iran despite our talk, now looks like we might be trading even more with them since at this point they could join the EU and no one would notice.
