Fair Tax Nation

Replace All Federal Taxes on Income with the Fair Tax Act , HR 25

For those who may be interested in tracking the time till or since Tax Freedom, both the popular ActionAmerica..org web-based Tax Freedom Day Clock and the recently released Tax Freedom Clock Widget for Macintosh have been updated.

The web-based version of the Tax Freedom Clock has been updated to display the time till or since Tax Freedom in months, days, hours, minutes and seconds, just like the widget, rather than stopping at days, as it did in the past.

Tax Freedom Clock Widget for MacThe Tax Freedom Clock Widget (pictured on left) now automatically fetches the latest Tax Freedom Day data from the internet, each year. This eliminates the need to download and install a new widget each year, just to update the new date for Tax Freedom Day. It actually fetches that date once, each time the widget displays.

We hope that you enjoy these clocks and direct your friends to them, so as to help demonstrate how out-of-control our taxes have become.

FYI, at the request of some of our friends in England (we lived in London for a year), we have created a version of the Tax Freedom Day Clock and the Tax Freedom Clock Widget, tailored for UK Tax Freedom Day.

If you think that our Tax Freedom Day is bad, at April 23, just be glad that you don't live in the UK. Their Tax Freedom Day for 2008 was June 2. The bad news is that the UK model appears to be where we're headed

There is no such thing as tax freedom day. One dirty little secret the Fair Tax exposes about federal income taxes are the embedded corporate income taxes that are a cost to businesses they pass onto the consumer at each stage of in the form of higher prices. We pay these taxes with every purchase of goods and services. Consequently we are never free from federal income taxes. This false concept of tax freedom day very well illustrates the point politicians like embedded taxes because people never truly realize the tax burden they bare and therefore don't complain. Out of sight out of mind.
Actually, Dan, Tax Freedom Day takes into consideration ALL of the hidden taxes. It also takes into account all of the people who pay NO income taxes (but do pay sales taxes).

The Tax Foundation uses data from the US Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis, which includes EVERY type of tax (federal and state, personal and corporate income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, gasoline and cigarette taxes, airport taxes, school taxes, hunting and fishing licenses, etc.) and every type of income, except unrecognized capital gains (which, to be fair, are included only when the capital gains are actually recognized). Only certain regulatory licenses are not included.

The fact that very few wealthy individuals pay most of the taxes (direct and hidden) is largely offset by the fact that millions of poor people pay nothing but very limited taxes like sales, cigarette and alcohol taxes. Those taxes paid by the poor are negligible, since they are based upon such low incomes. They do pay hidden taxes on food items, that are generally not taxed with sales taxes, but those hidden taxes are taken into account, by the inclusion of corporate income taxes.

All in all, Tax Freedom Day, as calculated by the Tax Foundation, is fairly accurate and probably only occurs a few short days earlier than the actual date of tax freedom, for the exact "average" middle-class American. If you are part of the teeming middle class, then the Tax Foundation's Tax Freedom Day probably isn't too far from your own personal Tax Freedom Day.
