I wouldn't rely on the fairtax.org website. They are slow to post updates. Go to thomas.gov. and type in the bill number or bill name in the search window. The list of cosponsors includes Boren.
We have 1 Sponsor and 53 Co-Sponosrs for a total of 54 Members in the House and 1 Sponsor and 4 Co-Sponsors for a total of 5 Members in the Senate.
Are we being short-counted in the House or padded in the Senate on the MAIN page? Maybe we should remove the word Co-Sponsors and go for the 54 Members in the House! I like the big numbers.
It's important to get more Democrats on board. In Texas, Senator Cornyn is a co-sponsor and Senator Hutchinson is running for governor, so she will be reluctant to take a position because it is a "federal" issue. My Congressman, Lamar Smith, a Republican, actually opposes the FairTax. I have tried to find out why, but all I get from him are form letter responses. Last election he wasn't opposed, so he isn't really much interested in his constituents.
Where it might make a difference is in those races that are close -- especially those where the Democrat is challenging an incumbent Republican. If we can convince the Democrat that FairTax supporters (whom I imagine generally vote Republican) will switch if he endorses the FairTax, that would potentially make the FairTax a little more bipartisan. Of course, it might also force the Republican to endorse the FairTax.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a congressional or senate race in 2010 where both major party candidates endorse the FairTax?
