Dear Karl,

Thank you for all you do.  I am curious if you know if the "Flat Tax" is a piece of legislation or just an idea.

I'm also wondering why in the world the FairTax isn't a major topic on FOX as it would turn our country around more than any other piece of legislation.

Goooo FairTax,

You should have asked someone who is knowledgeable about research things. Not someone who either cannot read (FLAT not FAIR) or does not know the difference!

HR-1040: To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide taxpayers a flat tax alternative to the current income tax system. (familiar number?)
Sponsor: Rep Burgess, Michael C. [TX-26] (introduced 2/12/2009) Cosponsors (4)
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-1040

Note..this didn't pass and is NOT currently an active piece of legislation in the Congress:
This bill never became law. This bill was proposed in a previous session of Congress. Sessions of Congress last two years, and at the end of each session all proposed bills and resolutions that haven't passed are cleared from the books. Members often reintroduce bills that did not come up for debate under a new number in the next session.
Last Action: Mar 5, 2007: Sponsor introductory remarks on measure. (CR H2160-2162)

It provides for a flat tax ALTERNATIVE, meaning IF it would be a 'better case scenario' than the standard filing. That's different the flat tax idea, which is not a bill right now, being floated around by folks like Beck, which would simply put the rate at a flat percentage of income. In some cases, with-holdings are still discussed and therefore filing is necessary, and in the one Beck refers to, no with-holdings, but you would still have to file PROOF of your income and the 'check' for your owed taxes annually. Neither compete with the TRULY fair tax system: the Fair Tax system which eliminates with-holdings AND the need to ever file with the IRS again.

Another bill many MISTAKE to be a 'tax plan' that IS currently in committee is HR 982. This is NOT a tax plan, 42 of our Fair Tax cosponsors are cosponsors of this legislation, including John Linder. Here is the summary of that bill:
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-982&tab=summary

2/11/2009--Introduced.
Tax Code Termination Act - Terminates the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 after December 31, 2012, except for self-employment taxes, Federal Insurance Contributions Act taxes, and railroad retirement taxes. Requires a two-thirds majority vote in Congress to change such termination date.
Declares that any new federal tax system should be a simple and fair system that: (1) applies a low rate to all Americans; (2) provides tax relief for working Americans; (3) protects the rights of taxpayers and reduces tax collection abuses; (4) eliminates the bias against savings and investment; (5) promotes economic growth and job creation; and (6) does not penalize marriage or families.
Requires that the new federal tax system be approved by Congress in its final form by July 4, 2012.

Note, it is NOT a plan, but repeals the code back to 1986 until 2012 and DECLARES what criteria a NEW SYSTEM MUST meet. That's not a plan, but some Fair Tax people are out there all upset about this bill. It actually appears to be laying the ground work FOR the Fair Tax. If you read the criteria, anyway, the Fair Tax meets it perfectly.

Just wanted to clarify the distinction between the HR 1040 which is not current in the 111th Congress that I can tell, and HR 982 which is currently in committee and has 115 cosponsors, virtually ALL Republican and which include 42 of our 61 Fair Tax cosponsors.

Per THOMAS.gov

Latest Major Action: 2/12/2009 Referred to House committee. Status: Referred to the Committee on Ways and Means, and in addition to the Committee on Rules, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.

Another way to put it; This bill has received as much attention in 111 Congress as HR-25.

That means "no attention" but it has been filed.
Thanks for the update..my info showed last activity in March of 07.

As long as Pelosi and the Dems are in the majority, NEITHER will ever get out of committee anyway. That's why this next election is so important. We HAVE to make tax reform a major issue this round. I really believe that this is the time to get the Fair Tax front and center in these debates. We have twenty states right now willing to take on the feds. What better atmosphere for a repeal of the 16th Amendment and REAL tax reform?

The process is so slow...in some cases, I guess that's a blessing. But, with the party that supports REAL tax reform in the House and Senate, the process can be sped up greatly.

Just wish we could get Boortz or Hannity or Huckabee to provide the platform for a national tax debate with the representatives of all of the various plans discussing their bills. I KNOW the Fair Tax will WIN in that type of comparison. I sent out ONE letter today. I'll be sending more out later. We have to keep the pressure on.

I'm familiar with the Burgess proposal. The question is, where is his research? There's no supporting data. It was weak a attempt to correct our tax problems.
LOL I asked in hopes to peak some curiosity and maybe look into it and maybe start promoting it?!!
What's the whoee about Carl Rove, I have found he is old guard GOP, one side to the old guard. How could we possibly expect him to join those of us who embrace the FairTax? The FairTax is a revolutionary idea, returns power back to WE THE PEOPLE from the establishment since the Revolution. Carl Rove is not about any of that, make no mistake.

The Flat tax keeps the current system in place.
Jamie ask Neal Boortz why the FairTax isn't THE TOPIC as to why FOX isn't heralding it.
Good luck with Fox News. They're good ol' boys, too. Yes, we get more balanced news than lame stream media provides but they're still players. Wonder how many lobbyists they have and what they get paid?
That said, I'm all for pushing Fair Tax at Fox News. We will make more headway there than on any of the other networks.
To all of the FairTax supporters throughout this great Nation - don't give up and don't give in!

It is my humble opinion that this is the year of the FairTax! I foresee in the coming few months a great opportunity to move the FairTax forward into the light it so richly deserves. There will be a large number of naysayers to speak against it and we must be prepared to defend it.

Everyone who has posted here (and other discussions) is correct - we simply must find a way to bring the FairTax to the forefront of debate!

My 3 cents!
3 cents? Dang that inflation....arg.
